Richard Stallman launched in 1984 the GNU Project to create a free Unix-like operating system, and has been the project's lead architect and organizer. Today, the GNU/Linux operating system, which can be freely copied, modified and distributed, is used in million of computers all over the world.
With the launch of the GNU Project, he started the free software movement and, in October 1985, set up the Free Software Foundation. Stallman has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a scholarship from the MacArthur foundation, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award, the Takeda Award for Social/Economical improvement, as well as several honoris causa doctorates. | |
